Expedition Overview
Step onto the surface of another planet just a few kilometers outside of San Pedro. The Valle de la Luna (Moon Valley) is part of the Cordillera de la Sal, famous for its bizarre rock formations sculpted by wind and water over millennia. Walk amongst massive sand dunes, explore cavernous salt structures, and conclude the day watching a spectacular sunset that paints the Andes mountains in hues of violet and pink.
The Route
3:00 PM Departure
Pick up from your hotel in San Pedro de Atacama and a short drive into the nearby Cordillera de la Sal.
3:30 PM Tres Marías & Salt Caves
Explore the famous "Three Marys" rock formations and learn about the intense geological history of these ancient salt caverns.
4:30 PM The Great Dune
Take a moderate hike up the Duna Mayor (Great Dune) and the Amphitheater to witness the vastness of the valley from above.
6:30 PM Kari Viewpoint Sunset
Arrive at the Mirador de Kari (Piedra del Coyote) to enjoy a complimentary cocktail and snack while watching the sun set over the Licancabur volcano.
7:30 PM Return to San Pedro
Short drive back into town, dropping you off near the main plaza in time for dinner.

Do I need to be fit for this tour?
The hiking is generally rated as easy to moderate. The hardest part is a 20-30 minute uphill walk in the sand to reach the Great Dune viewpoint. Taking it slow is perfectly fine.
What should I wear?
The Atacama desert changes temperature rapidly! Wear light, breathable clothing for the sunny afternoon hike, but definitely bring a warm windbreaker or jacket. The moment the sun drops below the horizon, the temperature will plummet.
How much is the entrance ticket?
The entrance fee is approximately 11,000 CLP. We highly recommend purchasing this ticket online in advance through PuntoTicket, as the park often limits daily entries.
